What does the web look like? Somehow, millions of people and ideas are mashed together and create an intricate cluster... or is it more like a messy canvas? I wanted to share two projects that have fascinated me recently. Each of them represents the internet in different ways. Drawball is a site where anyone can spray paint their own little part of a huge circle of graffiti. Clusterball is a project that tries to show different pages from wikipedia as interconnected dots.

Clusterball demonstrates how ideas and explanations are linked to others, and how terms for a particular topic area are often used in conjunction with each other. From the "History" page, for example, there are a cluster of links to Egypt, Historiography and something called Onomastics. That particular "clusterball" also shows that Timelines, Archaeology, and Chronology are closely linked (and that cluster is in turn connected to Old Maps and Earth Mysteries. These are the kinds of connections that you can't immediately see from just looking at the text of a page. I'd love to think about what a clusterball might look like for topics like anime or Halo 3.
Drawball is takes a very different approach but is also somehow an intriguing view into the web. When you arrive at the site, you see a large cricle with what looks like hundreds of small and large sketches. It's really just a huge virtual graffiti wall. Anyone can draw on it (but you have to know how to solve the puzzle, and you only get a little bit of ink). Apparently, thousands of people have been drawing on this ball for about two years. People are constantly covering up others' work, or adding to drawings that already exist. It's impossible to ever say what's on drawball because it's always changing! Different groups have united to collectively draw pictures that express their national pride, show their artistry, or advocate for political causes. Drawball even has a "hall of fame" that shows some truly amazing drawings and animates their progress.
Different ways of visualizing the same thing can give us different insights. In the case of clusterball, we can see how ideas are linked and how our understanding of concepts depends on understanding their context. On drawball, we see that spaces like the web are made up of the work of many and that decisions about how we interact with others' work contributes to the overall picture. How would you visualize the web?
