Happy Election Day! Don't forget to VOTE!
Keeping with the theme, I would like to highlight a few videos that have been floating around the internet that show young people engaging in the election and using Project NML skills to boot! (shout out to Nick for showing me two of the links!)
Appropriation - the ability to meaningfully sample and remix media content.
Students at Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, GA were recently highlighted on CNN for their remix of the hip-hop star TI's song "Whatever You Like." The students' song, "You Can Vote However You Like," appropriates the background track and melody from the original, but changes the lyrics into a debate between the McCain and Obama camps.
Here's the original performance on CNN:
You can watch an interview with the students here.
Negotiation - the ability to travel across diverse communities, discerning and respecting multiple perspectives, and grasping and following alternative norms.
Ok this one might be stretching it, but this video is a report from 5th grader Damon Weaver from Canal Point Elementary/KEC TV in Florida. In my opinion, Damon does an amazing job interviewing and interacting with the adults at a Joe Biden speaking event. It's probable the event required him to learn some new norms, and I think he negotiated them spectacularly. He is able to communicate effectively with the other people in the space, as well as keep his own style and perspective. You go, Damon!
Networking - the ability to search for, synthesize, and disseminate information.
This last crew of youth worked with their teacher, Kevin Froner, at Hunter Science High School in Manhattan to register over 1,000 high school students to vote. They created a PSA for their campaign, called Youth Vote Project, and used several channels to get the word out including YouTube (over 4000 hits), Facebook, the local news, and good old-fashion telephoning and hitting the streets. They've done an amazing job of learning about voting and the election, coming up with a plan to get more people registered, and then getting the word out to make the plan effective. Watch an interview with them on the news here (part 1) and here (part 2).
And here's the PSA they made:
